We asked world champion skier Lindsey Vonn and other high-profile Vail & Beaver Creek locals share their favorite activities on the mountains and in the valley. Here are 15 to add to your "must-do" list.

1. Ski or snowboard, of course. But after that, reserve some time to relax in the village, says ski champ Lindsey Vonn. "It's fun to mill around Vail Village and hang out on a sunny patio after a hard workout," she says.
2. Take a horse-drawn sleigh ride. For an unforgettable Rocky Mountain experience, join Bearcat Stables for a horse-drawn sleigh ride and gourmet dinner at their restored historic ranch, conveniently located 15 minutes west of Beaver Creek, Colorado in the beautiful Cordillera valley.
3. Mush! Mush! Vail valley local Heather Brown, 42, says that when guests visit, she likes to take them dog sledding. It's a great way to explore a lot of terrain without crowds, and the dogs are incredible, she says. Mountain Musher runs on a private trail in Wolcott, 10 miles west of Beaver Creek. The sleds will take you through glades of aspen and pine trees. Without other traffic like snowmobiles, guests often see wildlife including fox, coyote, deer and elk.
4. Colorado Ski & Snowboard Museum. Check out artifacts of the ski industry, see who made it to the Hall of Fame, and learn some local history here. It's amazing to see how far skiing and snowboarding has evolved over the years.
5. Go fishing any time of year. "I'm also getting into fly fishing in the valley," says Lindsey Vonn. "My dog Leo joins me for that too, although he tends to scare away the fish." There are a number of fishing outfitters throughout Vail, Avon, and Beaver creek with guides who will get you casting in no time.
6. Visit McCoy Park in Beaver Creek. McCoy Park, which is accessed via The Strawberry Park Lift, is considered one of Beaver Creek's best-kept secrets. The park features more than 32 kilometers of groomed and rustic trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. And, since it's nestled between Beaver Creek and Bachelor Gulch villages, McCoy Park offers amazing views of three mountain ranges at once.
7. Minturn Cellars Winery. Several wine aficionados we talked to suggested this hidden gem, housed in a historic 1900 building in Minturn. Call for tasting room times and the cellar's current wine list: (970) 827-4065
8. Book an Adventure Session. Some guests hire an instructor to ski with them all day just to cut lift lines and find the best powder, and it's not a bad idea. But Vail offers something even better. "Adventure Sessions" are a hybrid private/group experience for experienced skiers focused on touring and making the most of the day rather than on instruction. You can still cut lines, find the best conditions and terrain, navigate the huge mountain easily, and even gain some pointers, but at a lower price point ($150 per person with no more than 5 skiers).
9. Get custom fit for cowboy boots or hat in Vail or Beaver Creek. Western wear shops are a staple in the Vail Valley, and when you walk in, the experts will custom fit you for the boots or cowboy hat of your dreams (steamed and molded to conform to your head so you know it looks perfect).
10. Take a free, guided snowshoe tour from the Nature Discovery Center, located at the top of the Eagle Bahn Gondola. Tours are offered daily beginning mid-December and are led by an expert naturalist from Walking Mountains, a non-profit science learning center that promotes environmental stewardship through natural science education.
11. Attend the Vail Mountain Games (as a spectator or participant). Held in summer and winter, these events bring professional and amateur athletes to the Vail Valley for several days of adventure, competition, demos, music, art, and immersion in the mountain lifestyle. It's truly a bucket-list experience.
12. Join the Friday Afternoon Club. Celebrity chef Kelly Liken says she and her family like to attend the FAC at the top of the Vail gondola every summer. "There is live music, and the view is breathtaking. There are many different kinds of hikes in the area as well. The North Trail is a personal favorite. It is demanding at times but when the flowers are in bloom you don't notice that you are out of breath as much!" she says.
13. Ski the Minturn Mile. The Minturn Mile is one of the most famous off-piste ski runs in the world. It is accessed from the top of chairs 3 or 7 on Vail Mountain and then by taking the out-of-bounds access gate at the top of the turn on Lost Boy trail. From there, you'll descend more than 3,100 feet in elevation to an unofficial trailhead near the Minturn Saloon. Note: Only try this if you're an expert skier with backcountry knowledge. This route is beyond the bounds of Vail Resort and not serviced by ski patrol.
14. Go biking year-round. You didn't think mountain biking was a winter activity? Think again. Locals like Seth Johnson, 31, an avid cyclist, recommend snow biking in winter with fat, studded tires, or using the ski bikes provided at the adventure center at Vail. In summer, there's plenty of sweet singletrack lacing the slopes too, and sports shops throughout town rent equipment if you don't have your own, he says.
15. Come back in the summer. Don't assume the fun ends when the snow melts. The Vail Valley, including Beaver Creek, has a full menu of activities in the summer. Concerts, hikes, festivals, or just beautiful places to hang out and enjoy the scenery abound. "I love walking my dog Leo by the river in summertime," says Lindsey Vonn.

Ski Like a Local

We asked a handful of ski instructors and patrollers to give us the inside scoop: What's the best way to ski Vail or Beaver Creek, find the powder stashes, and avoid lines? Here's what they had to say:

1. Get out there early (before 9:00 a.m.) and you'll avoid the most lines. You'll be on the mountain before ski school starts, and before the commuters from Denver arrive.
2. If you can't go before 9:00 a.m., wait until 11:00. If you miss the early window, it's better to hang out, eat a big breakfast and grab a lift up later in the morning when the crowds dissipate and many skiers and riders are starting to take a break.
3. On busy days or holidays, consider skipping the gondola and ride chairs instead. Often it's quicker to take side chairs up the mountain and traverse a little bit rather than wait in a long gondola line.
4. Don't hop into the closest lift line. As you're descending toward the lift, scan the maze and see which line looks smallest and aim for that one. Oftentimes, skiers and riders go for the closest, easiest line, but it's not always the quickest, experts say.
5. Know the best runs. On Vail, the ski instructors we talked to said it's great to start on Riva Ridge, a long, twisting groomed black that will get you warmed up and excited for the day ahead. Another good choice, especially if you're based in Lionshead, is Simba trail. If the back bowls are your goal, consider going straight to Blue Sky Basin and working your way back toward the west, opposite of the tourists' usual traffic flow.
6. Be bold. Finally, all the experts we talked with agree: Don't be afraid to walk up to staff members at Vail or Beaver Creek and ask for tips and insider information on the day's best conditions and runs. Everyone who works here loves it for a reason, and they're excited to share what they know.

This AAA Four Diamond Award-Winning restaurant in The Pines Lodge at Beaver Creek is a fine dining experience you'll not soon forget. Everything in this kitchen is made from scratch in-house, including the bread and sausages! Nearly all ingredients are locally sourced, including the lamb, striped bass, beef and goat cheese. The Osprey Lounge

Since The Osprey at Beaver Creek is the closest hotel to a ski lift in North America, The Osprey Lounge is one of the closest restaurants to a ski lift! Ski off the mountain and right into après. Breckenridge

The Living Room
